Sancho Panza

Gustave Doré

Cleveland Museum of Art

The drawing depicts a man viewed from behind and slightly to the side, with his head tilted back. He wears a long, curved hat with a short feather tucked into the band; the hat is pointed at the top and covers the back of his head and neck. The man has a beard and mustache. He is dressed in what appears to be a puffy-sleeved shirt or tunic. The man's body and hat are drawn in dark brown and black lines on a piece of off-white paper with a visible texture. There are darker smudges and discolorations on the paper, and two thin brown lines cross the paper horizontally. A flourish of a pen or brush with the words "Sancho Panza" is located at the bottom. More cursive writing appears to the left of the flourish but cannot be read.
