Chōbunsai Eishi

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image depicts two scenes stacked vertically, on a beige background with a thin border. The top scene shows a woman and a girl on a walkway beside a canal. The woman sits on the left wearing a headscarf, a striped robe with burnt orange, white and blue; she holds a covered bowl on her lap. The girl on the right wears her hair in a bun, a robe with vertical stripes in beige, black and white; she holds a cloth to her shoulder and looks down at the dog lying on the walkway between them. The walkway runs across the width behind them. There are buildings and fences in the background on the left, and on the right there are green trees against a light-tan sky. The bottom scene shows a boat on the water. The boat has a covered area with a slanted roof in the middle. Four women wearing kimonos sit on cushions; one wears a wide-brimmed hat. A woman standing on the right helps another into the boat. The boat's bow and waves in the water are at the bottom. The water has black lines indicating movement, with white details on the waves. The boat and people are colored with black outlines and shading, and have detail in pink, peach and white.
