Pairs of Figures from the Four Continents

Chelsea Porcelain Factory

Cleveland Museum of Art

The ceramic sculpture depicts two pairs of figures, each pair on a separate base. The left pair consists of a white-skinned man and woman, while the right pair features a white-skinned woman and a black-skinned man. The left figure is a white-skinned man with short hair, wearing a pink and gold cloth wrapped around his waist. He holds a broken object in his right hand and another object up to the face of the woman beside him. The woman beside him is also white-skinned but with dark hair, and she wears a pink and orange patterned cloth around her waist. She holds a basket in her left hand and has her right hand up to her face. The right figure is a white-skinned woman with curly hair adorned with flowers; she wears a pink floral cloth wrapped around her waist and a black scarf around her neck. She sits on top of a white-skinned man with horns and a black body. The man has his legs bent underneath him and his arms around the woman. Both bases are white with gold accents and floral designs. The background of the image is dark gray.
