Iwai Hanshiro IV as Murasame or Matsukaze

Katsukawa Shunshō

Cleveland Museum of Art

A Japanese print depicts a man dressed as a woman in a traditional kimono, holding scales. The kimono has a light-colored background with white and orange designs, and orange accents. The woman's hair is styled in an updo with sticks protruding from it. The woman's kimono has a fringe at the bottom and appears to be tied at the waist with a sash. The scales have two containers on either side, each with a design. The background of the print is beige-colored with a darker beige floor. The print features a signature in the bottom-right corner. The overall composition is set against a simple, neutral background.
