The Cascade at Marli

Jacques Rigaud

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image depicts a sepia-toned engraving or etching of a large outdoor scene. A long straight path leads to a multi-tiered cascade or fountain in the distance. The path is flanked by dense rows of trees and hedges. In the foreground, people in 18th-century clothing are gathered on either side of the path. Some are on foot, while others ride horses. A few dogs are also present. At the bottom of the image, a caption reads "VUE DE LA CASCADE DE MARLI" in capital letters. Additional text in smaller script appears below but is illegible. The image has a light brown border around the edges.
