Pendant with the Virgin and Child

Godefroid de Huy

Cleveland Museum of Art

The object is a gold pendant in the shape of a quatrefoil. The pendant has a large central oval panel with a gold frame decorated with dots and a leaf pattern, containing an image of the Virgin Mary wearing green and blue and holding a sceptre, and the Christ child wearing blue and red. The central panel is surrounded by four smaller circular panels, each depicting a figure with a halo and Latin writing. The top panel shows a woman in blue and green with a green and blue halo; she holds a green object. The bottom panel shows the Christ child wearing blue and green. The left and right panels each show a woman with a blue halo and blue and green clothing. The quatrefoil shape is formed by four curved sections, each with a rounded end. The top section has a gold ring for suspension and is decorated with four gemstones: a white stone in the center flanked by a brown and black stone on either side, and a small black stone at the top and bottom. The curved sections on the left, right, and bottom have gemstones set into them. The background of the image is dark gray at the top and light gray at the bottom.
