Sketches of Horses (verso)

Cleveland Museum of Art

The verso side of a sketchbook page by Albrecht Dürer titled "Sketches of Horses". A brownish-tan piece of paper with darker brown spots and stains. The paper has rough, torn edges and appears to be made from parchment or vellum. There are several sketches of horses' heads in reddish-brown ink. The sketches are simple line drawings and feature various angles and expressions. Two of the horse heads appear to be in profile, one facing left and the other facing right. A third horse head is drawn looking forward and slightly down. In the top center of the paper, there is a two-word Latin phrase written in the same reddish-brown ink as the sketches: "VIRTUTIS HONORIS". The text is small and positioned above the horse head sketches. The background of the image is light gray.
