Death and the Woodcutter

Alphonse Legros

Cleveland Museum of Art

Black and white drawing of a woodcutter sitting on the ground leaning back. He has a beard and short hair. He wears a loose-fitting collared short-sleeved shirt and pants tucked into tall boots. He sits with his right arm bent at the elbow, hand on his knee and left arm on his thigh, hand curled into a fist. Beside him on the right another figure sits leaning over a tree stump with an axe. The figure wears loose-fitting pants tucked into boots and a long-sleeved collared shirt covered by a loose short-sleeved tunic. The background contains thin trees with little foliage. The scene is bordered by a thick off-white margin with very small writing along the bottom.
