London As It Is: Blackfriars, from Southwark Bridge

Thomas Shotter Boys

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image depicts a river scene with a bridge in the background. The river is wide and calm, with several boats and barges on it. The boats are mostly small, with some having pointed brown covers. There are two large piles of green material, possibly hay or cargo, covered with brown tarps on the river. The riverbank on the right side of the image has buildings and docks, while the left side appears to have more buildings and a bridge in the distance. The sky is overcast and gray, with some white clouds. In the background, there are several tall buildings, including a large domed structure. The overall atmosphere suggests a daytime scene in an urban setting.
