The Crucifixion with Four Angels

Martin Schongauer

Cleveland Museum of Art

Black and white image of a crucifixion scene with a man nailed to a large wooden cross. The man has a thorn crown on his head and a loincloth on. His arms are stretched out to the sides and nailed to the cross. Two angels are to the left and right of the cross. They are collecting blood in chalices. Two other figures are on either side of the base of the cross. The figure on the left appears to be a woman, wearing a long robe and head covering with a halo around her head. The figure on the right appears to be a man in a long robe with a halo around his head. They both have their hands clasped to their chests or over their abdomens. The background features rolling hills and a city skyline. A skull and a femur rest on the ground. A leafless tree trunk is on the right side. A small cherub is on the left side. An angel collecting blood is flying in from the left side.
