The Apocalypse: The Opening of the Seventh Seal

Jean Duvet

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image depicts an arched composition divided into two main sections. The top portion features a crowded scene with multiple figures. A central figure, likely a king or deity, sits on a throne-like structure, holding a scepter or staff in one hand and what appears to be a sun or halo in the other. This figure wears a crown and has a long beard. Surrounding this central figure are several other figures, including winged beings and individuals holding various objects such as spears, a trumpet, and what looks like a bow and arrow. In the bottom section, a chaotic scene unfolds with numerous bodies strewn about on the ground. Some of these bodies appear to be emerging from a chariot wheel or are positioned near a body of water. A figure with large wings stands to the left, looking down at the bodies. On the right side, another figure holds a staff or scepter. The entire scene is rendered in dark tones, suggesting it might be an engraving or etching. Text elements are present but are not clearly legible. The overall composition is dense with activity, depicting a dramatic and possibly apocalyptic event.
