Egypt and Nubia: Volume I - No. 18, The Great Sphinx, Pyramids of Gizeh, Front View

Louis Haghe

Cleveland Museum of Art

A sepia-toned drawing of the Great Sphinx. The Sphinx body faces the viewer with its head turned right; the body is in the center; its head is large in proportion to the body; it has a flat, rectangular headpiece; the nose and mouth are thin; and it has sunken eye sockets. The body of the Sphinx is mostly shades of light brown; its face is shaded darker. The Sphinx body sits on a flat area; its body drops below the flat area. Behind the Sphinx on the left and right are two pyramids; the one on the left is behind and to the left; its pointed top peaks at the top center of the image; the one on the right peaks above the top right corner; a smaller pyramid shape sits just behind and to the right. People and animals are on the right, by a mound of sand; they are very small compared to the Sphinx. The sky is filled with clouds; the image density lightens toward the top. The image has a boarder; the image is slightly darker; there are spots and discoloration on the border. The image does not fill the entire space; there is a white background.
