Three Scenes from the Passion of Christ (recto) Architectural Sketch (verso)

Cleveland Museum of Art

Recto side: A double-page sketch on aged paper, primarily sepia-toned. Left side features a detailed drawing of a biblical scene with multiple figures. The scene on the left appears to have three distinct sections or scenes stacked vertically. The top section depicts a semi-nude male figure on top of a rocky outcrop; he holds a spear in one hand and a cloth in the other. The middle section shows a procession of armed men on horseback and on foot. The bottom section depicts two men interacting, one appears to be assisting or supporting the other. Verso side: A simple sketch on aged paper that appears to be the back of the recto side. The verso side features faint, illegible writing and a simple architectural sketch in red. The background of both sides shows signs of aging, with visible stains and wear.
