Three Swine Lying in Front of a Sty

Karel Dujardin

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image depicts three pigs lying in front of a sty. The pigs are lying on the ground, one on top of the other, on the bottom half of the image. The pig on the left lies on its side with its head to the left and its back legs bent; the middle pig lies on top with its head to the right; and the third pig is only partially visible behind the second pig. The sty in the background is made of wooden slats with a slanted roof covered in thatch. A fourth pig is partially visible inside the sty behind a wooden trough. The sty is on the left, with trees on the right side of the image and a cloudy sky above. The overall scene is rendered in black and white.
