Nanda and the elders, page from a Bhagavata Purana

Cleveland Museum of Art

A painting on old paper depicts a scene with seven men sitting on the ground. The man in the center wears a dark-colored robe with a red and white pattern and gestures with his hand. He sits on a low platform or mat. The other men wear light-colored robes and head coverings. Above the men are three trees against a black sky; the trees have green leaves and some have flowers. Below the men is a border with a green wavy line and several red and white flowers. A duck swims at the bottom center. The background behind the men is red. The painting's edges are rough and uneven, with some areas of wear and tear. Text appears in a foreign script in the upper-left corner.
