Antiquities of Rome: The Appian Way

Giovanni Battista Piranesi

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image depicts a black and white illustration of a ruined landscape. The scene shows a wide, straight road with several tall, crumbling stone structures on either side. The structures are broken and decaying, with some having flat tops and others jagged tops, and some have archways. Trees are growing out of the structures. In the foreground, there are piles of rubble and debris scattered around, including what appears to be a fallen column. Several people are standing in the distance, some in groups, some alone. The sky is cloudy. There is writing in a foreign language at the bottom of the image. The overall atmosphere suggests an ancient, abandoned cityscape.
