The Passion: The Crucifixion

Urs Graf the Elder

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image depicts a crucifixion scene. Three men are on crosses, the central figure's body is pale and emaciated with a crown of thorns on his head; he wears a loincloth. The two men on either side have loincloths and appear more muscular. The central figure's arms are outstretched. Two men on either side hold up the horizontal beam of the cross. A crowd of onlookers surrounds the crosses; some wear robes, others wear hats and knee-high socks. One man holds a long pole. A bucket sits on the ground at the bottom. The background includes green hills and a blue sky with clouds. The scene includes a title plate at the top of the cross reading "INRI". A signature is at the bottom.
