New Model for a Cartouche

Stefano Della Bella

Cleveland Museum of Art

A black and white etching on off-white paper depicts a central oval frame surrounded by four birds. The oval frame is bordered by a thin line, with a smooth interior surface, and has no text or image within it. Two birds are on either side of the frame; on the left side, a bird faces right with its wings spread and feathers ruffled. On the right side, a bird faces left with its wings spread and feathers ruffled. Two more birds are at the bottom, one on each side, with their heads and bodies visible; one faces right and the other faces left. Two additional birds are above the frame; one in the center and the other on the right; both face towards the right. The birds have long feathers, beaks, and claws; they appear to be emerging from or standing on a mass of flowing material. The background of the etching is off-white paper with darker spots and lines scattered throughout. At the bottom of the etching, there is a line of small text in italics that reads "S. Della Bella fecit cum Privileg Regis".
