Cupid and Psyche

Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse

Cleveland Museum of Art

The sculpture depicts two figures on a bed. One figure, a woman, sits on the right side of the bed, leaning forward with her left arm extended upward. The woman's right leg is extended forward. She is naked, has long hair, and holds a small pot in her right hand. The other figure, a man or a winged god, lies on his back on the bed with his body facing left. He appears to be asleep or unconscious. A wing protrudes from his back. The bed has a headboard and a footboard with columns. A small table with a bird on top sits to the left of the bed. The sculpture is bronze with a brown patina. It sits on a white marble base with a decorative trim. The background is a gradient from dark gray at the top to light gray at the bottom.
