The Actor Ichikawa Danjuro as a Samurai

Utagawa Toyokuni

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image shows a Japanese woodblock print of a man dressed as a samurai. The man has dark hair pulled back and is wearing a headband. He wears a yellow and white checkered robe with wide orange and green sleeves and a black undergarment. The robe is tied with a wide sash at the waist and draped over his left shoulder. His feet are bare. He holds a sword at his side with a black scabbard and a white sword guard. The sword's handle is wrapped in a white cord. The man stands on a beige ground with a tree branch and leaves above him. A green hill or wave is behind him on the left. There are several lines of Japanese text on the right side of the image, including a circular seal. A house-shaped seal and a rectangular seal are at the bottom right.
