Nakamura Utaemon III as the Monkey Trainer Yojiro (from the series Famous Kabuki Plays)

Utagawa Kunisada

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image shows a traditional Japanese woodblock print of a man in profile. The man has a shaved forehead with black hair on the sides pulled back and styled into buns. His eyebrows are exaggerated and black. He wears a robe with a blue and white design resembling ferns or other plant material. The background of the print is a mottled gray-beige color. There are several lines of Japanese text on the left and right sides of the image, written vertically. The text is in black ink. The man is shown from the chest up, turned to the right. His lips are red, and his facial expression appears intense. The image presents a striking portrait of a man in traditional Japanese attire.
