A Distant View of Snow on the Sumida River in Edo

Ikeda Eisen

Cleveland Museum of Art

The rectangular woodblock print depicts a snowy winter scene. A blue body of water fills the bottom half. A curved boat with eight people wearing winter clothing and head coverings is in the foreground near the bottom. Three people hold parasols. A white-capped wave protrudes from the bottom-left corner. A single tree with a curved bare branch and sparse green leaves is on the left. A snow-covered mountain or cliff juts into the water on the left edge. Two smaller boats are on the water near the center and right. A snowy shoreline with trees, a building and a fence line is across the back. The sky above is gray and fades to black at the top. Japanese writing and two red seals are in the top-right corner.
