Sketchbook, page 85: Study of a Ship and Buoy

Ernest Meissonier

Cleveland Museum of Art

Pencil sketch on off-white paper of a ship and a buoy, annotated "58" in upper left. The ship occupies the upper half of the sketch. The ship has a pointed bow and several masts. The hull of the ship is depicted with several lines suggesting the planks of the deck. The ship's rail is scratched in lightly. A buoy floats on the water directly in front of the ship's bow. The buoy depicted with simple lines and shading. The sketch is simple with a few lines indicating waves around the buoy. The artist's rendering of perspective causes the ship and buoy to appear on a diagonal line from upper left to lower right. The ship and buoy are centered in the sketch. The sketch covers most of the paper.
