Sketchbook, page 46: Standing Male Figure

Ernest Meissonier

Cleveland Museum of Art

Black and white sketch of a standing male figure. The man has short dark hair and is wearing what appears to be 17th-century clothing. He is turned slightly to the right. His right leg is straight and his left leg is bent. He holds an object in both hands at chest level. The drawing shows shading and appears to be on aged paper with three holes along the top. The figure's attire consists of a hat under his hair, a jacket with puffy sleeves and high collar, loose-fitting pants, and shoes. The background of the sketch features shading behind the figure. A small smudge or stain is visible on the right side of the paper.
