Coin of Eukratides I

Cleveland Museum of Art

The Coin of Eukratides I shows two sides of a silver coin. The left side features a profile view of a man's head facing right, wearing a helmet with a brim and a crest on top. The helmet has a strap under the chin. The man's hair is visible under the helmet, and he wears a tunic or cloak with folds visible at the neck. The right side displays a man on horseback, riding right, holding a spear or lance in his right hand. He wears a tunic and possibly a cape flowing behind him. The horse has a saddle and appears to be rearing up. Above the rider, Greek text reads "ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΜΕΓΑΛΟΥ" and below the rider, it reads "ΕΥΚΡΑΤΙΔΟΥ". The coin has a raised edge with a decorative border around both sides.
