A Selection of Twenty of the Most Picturesque Views in Paris, and its Environs: Dedication Page

John Girtin

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image shows an aged, rectangular piece of paper with a formal dedication page. The top features an illustrated crest with two lions on either side of a shield adorned with a crown. The lions have long hair; one faces left and the other right. Behind the crest are lines radiating outward, resembling sun rays. Below the crest and above the text are decorative swirls. The text is written in black ink, with the largest text reading "George Earl of Ilchester" and "Lord Lieutenant of the County of Hereford". The smaller text below includes a formal dedication message addressed to "My Lord". The message is followed by a date and an address: "April 4, 1820" and "No. 8. Little Newport St. Soho". The bottom right corner features a signature. The background of the paper is light brown with darker brown spots. The paper has a rough texture and appears aged.
