Study of a Female Nude (possibly for an unrealized allegorical painting) (recto); Studies of Drapery and Study of a Landscape (verso)

Pierre Puvis de Chavannes

Cleveland Museum of Art

A large piece of paper with a pencil drawing of a seated nude woman on one side. The woman sits on the ground, slumped forward, her right elbow on her right knee and her right hand on her forehead. Her hair falls around her face to her shoulders. Two vague shapes are drawn behind her. A second drawing on the other side of the paper shows studies of drapery and a landscape. The drapery study shows a hanging piece of fabric drawn from two different angles. The landscape study, in the top right corner, depicts a line of mountains or hills and what may be a body of water. The drawings are on aged paper with rough edges.
