Egypt and Nubia, Volume III: Gate of the Metwaleys, Cairo

Louis Haghe

Cleveland Museum of Art

The image shows a sepia-toned drawing of a large stone building with a crowd of people in front. The building is made of stone blocks and has a tall tower on top with a pointed roof. There are two large arched doorways on the front of the building. The building appears to be a gate or entrance to a larger structure. The crowd of people in front of the building are dressed in traditional clothing, some wearing robes and headscarves. Some people are standing, while others are sitting on the ground. The scene is set in an urban environment, with other buildings visible on either side of the main structure. The overall atmosphere of the image is one of activity and community, with people gathered together in front of the gate.
