Calligraphic Motto from Shazanrō Picture Book

Tani Bunchō

Cleveland Museum of Art

The book is open to two pages. The left page has a large black calligraphic character in the center. The character is written in a vertical line and has several curved and straight strokes. Three small leaf-like shapes are positioned to the right and below the character. A thin black border surrounds the character. The right page has a similar black border and a faint gray image of a plant or tree with a long stem and several branches. The pages are off-white and have a slightly textured appearance. The book's cover is visible on the left and right sides, with a brown background and a pattern of gold, blue, and green designs.
