Escutcheon

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Black and white image of Escutcheon by artist M.C. Escher. Six identical, vertically oriented, ornate metal pieces are arranged side-by-side. Each metal piece is approximately 2-3 times taller than wide. The metal pieces have a symmetrical design with curved lines and heart-shaped cutouts. The designs feature floral-like patterns at the top and bottom. The two outer pieces are lighter in color than the four inner pieces. The four inner pieces are darker and have more pronounced textures. The background is a gradient of white at the top and dark gray at the bottom. The metal pieces are set against a smooth surface with subtle shading.
