Profile Bust of a Woman

John Christian Rauschner

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image shows a square frame with a recessed oval portrait. The frame is made of metal, possibly silver or pewter, and has a thick border with a beveled inner edge. The frame's surface shows signs of wear and aging. Inside the frame, there is a black background with a thin, raised oval border. Within this oval is a profile bust portrait of a woman. She faces left, wearing a head covering, possibly a cap or bonnet, and a dark dress with a white collar. The oval portrait is surrounded by four small, symmetrical floral motifs, one in each corner. The artist's signature is visible in the lower right part of the oval. The frame is set against a plain white background.
