The painting depicts a large, dimly lit interior with numerous tall, thick columns. The columns are gray and have ridges and grooves. They are arranged in rows, with some closer together than others. Chandeliers hang from the ceiling, which has a decorative border. The room is filled with people dressed in long robes, some kneeling and others standing. A few people are gathered around a body on a table. The atmosphere appears somber and mournful. The title of the work is "The Death of the First Born" and it is by Erastus Salisbury Field.
