Study for "The Death of the Earl of Chatham"

John Singleton Copley

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image shows a sketch of a man in 18th-century attire. The man is standing and wearing a long cape over his left shoulder, with his right hand holding the cape out to the side. He has on a white shirt, a waistcoat, breeches, and shoes with buckles. His hair is styled in a powdered wig. The background of the sketch is a light greenish-gray color, and there are some faint pencil marks and sketches of other figures or objects on the right side. The edges of the paper are rough and torn.
