Outline of Trees, Figure, and Canoe (from Sketchbook X)

William Trost Richards

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Pencil sketch on two facing pages of a sketchbook. Left page mostly blank with a faint sketch of a boat on water near a shoreline and trees. Right page has a detailed sketch of a canoe on water near a shoreline with trees and vegetation. The canoe has a single pole. Trees and vegetation take up most of the right side. The sketch appears to be a landscape drawing. The pages have a thin black line border around the edges. The sketchbook pages are off-white with darker shading around the edges. A vertical line down the center indicates where the pages are bound. Three small holes are on the left side of the center line. The sketch appears to be in a simple style with minimal details. The image is in shades of gray.
