Balance Rock, Pine Hill, Walton, 1871 (from Sketchbook)

Daniel Huntington

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Black and white sketch of two pages from a sketchbook. The left page depicts a rocky outcropping with a large boulder balanced on top. The outcropping has multiple layers and a person standing on top. The right page depicts trees, possibly evergreen and birch trees, with one tree on the left taller and thicker than the rest. The trees appear to be growing out of a rocky area. There is writing on the bottom of both pages. The sketch is done in pencil. The overall scene appears to be a landscape, possibly a mountainous or hilly area.
