Study of Seated Male Figures for Sculpture Base (from Sketchbook)

John Quincy Adams Ward

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Black and white sketch of two seated male figures. The figures are positioned side by side. Both are sitting with their upper bodies leaning back and their lower bodies angled to their right. The figure on the left has one arm behind his head and the other bent at the elbow with the hand positioned near the right shoulder. The figure on the right has both arms raised, with the right arm bent at the elbow and the left arm extended behind him. Both figures have their legs bent and covered by drapery. The drapery on the figure on the left appears to be bunched up around the waist. The background of the sketch is plain and light-colored.
