Baron Matsudaira

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Two pieces of paper, likely rice paper or similar, placed side by side on a light brown surface. The left piece of paper, wider than the right, contains: - On the left edge, a group of 5-6 long, thin, dark vertical lines of varying lengths. - A central cluster of 6 round rubbings, arranged in 2 rows of 3, with top 2 centered and bottom 4 irregularly spaced. - The rubbings are from tangs (nakago) of ancient swords, featuring etched designs and text. The right piece of paper contains: - On the right edge, 3 long, thin dark lines with rounded ends; - On the left side, 2 round rubbings stacked vertically; - A small elongated oval and circular rubbing below the long lines. The rubbings on both papers show detailed impressions of etched patterns and signatures on the hilts of ancient swords. Text appears on some rubbings and near the bottom of the left paper.
