Horse Armor Probably Made for Count Antonio IV Collalto (1548–1620)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a horse wearing a full set of armor. The horse is dark brown, facing left, with its front left leg raised. It has a short, dark tail. The armor is primarily silver-colored metal with an etched floral pattern. The horse's head is covered by a metal plate with eye and nostril cutouts. Red straps go around the horse's head and under its chin, attached to a metal chain that hangs from the horse's mouth. A similar red strap wraps around the horse's neck. The saddle area has a gold-colored leather seat and a red strap hanging down. The armor covers the horse's neck, body, and back. It consists of multiple plates that fit together, with a scalloped edge along the bottom. The background is a plain gray color.
