Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Dark brown tsuba with a rounded shape and scalloped edges. The tsuba features a central metal plate with a distinctive shape, resembling a vase or a teardrop with the pointed end down. Two oval-shaped holes are present, one larger than the other. The larger hole is teardrop shaped. The central plate exhibits a darker patina and some rust-like spots. The outer area is decorated with a design resembling twisted rope or wavy lines. Small gold-colored inlays are scattered throughout, depicting what appear to be thin branches or vines with some small floral patterns. A gold-colored, floral-patterned inlay is on the right side. A vertical line of red text "91825" is on the right side of the central plate.
