Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The tsuba, a sword guard by an unknown artist, is a rounded square shape with curved sides. Dark brown in color, it features a central oval cutout, wider at the top than at the bottom. Two rounded circles are on either side, while wavy cloud-like shapes are cut out around the perimeter. A smaller, rounded rectangle cutout with rounded sides is at the bottom. The background of the image is light gray.
