Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Dark brown metal sword guard, tsuba, with rounded square shape and wavy edge. The guard has an oval-shaped opening in the center with a distinctive H-shaped cutout; the metal on either side of the H is a lighter brown than the rest of the piece. The edge features interlocking oval and teardrop-shaped cutouts. Gold-colored inlays of oak leaves and curled stems decorate the piece. The background of the image is light gray.
