Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The sword guard, or Tsuba, by an unknown artist, is square with rounded corners and made of dark brown metal. It features rounded rectangular cutouts side by side in the center. The top cutout has rounded ends while the center cutout tapers to a point at the top. The guard has a raised design of three flower-like shapes, two large and one small, each with multiple thin petal-like protrusions. The background of the image is plain and light-colored. The Tsuba has a dark patina with lighter areas on the raised design elements.
