Knife Handle (Kozuka)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image depicts a rectangular metal object, known as a Kozuka or Knife Handle. The object is long and narrow with a flat top and bottom. The left side is plain and smooth with a subtle sheen and a slight darker border around the edges. The right side features an engraved design with a central figure wearing a helmet and armor with a large crest, holding a weapon in one hand. The central figure appears to be emerging from waves on the right side of the object. The engraved area has a darker patina than the plain area and includes gold inlays. The background of the image is a light gray color.
