Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The sword guard, also known as a tsuba, is rusted and made of metal. It has a roughly oval shape with a large central oval hole and several smaller holes of varying shapes around it. The metal appears dark brown with patches of blue and orange rust. The edges are rough and broken in places. There are small circular etchings or engravings on the top portion. The background of the image is a plain gray color. The tsuba has a broken lower left corner. The overall shape is asymmetrical.
