Sword Guard (Tsuba)

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The sword guard, known as Tsuba, is circular and made of dark metal. The guard has a central, vertically elongated triangular hole and two rounded holes on either side, one larger than the other. To the left, there are two parallel, elongated oval-shaped holes. The surface features an etched design with a leafy vine on right, pagodas on right and floral motifs on the top left. The background of the image is plain and light-colored. The Tsuba is likely an example of Japanese sword craftsmanship, created by an artist from an unspecified period.
