A Peacock Perched on a Maple Tree

Utagawa Hiroshige

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A colorful bird, a peacock with a blue head and neck, yellow and black body, and long tail feathers with blue eyespots, perches on a branch. The peacock faces right; its body angled right and away. Its long tail feathers extend down the left side of the tree trunk. The branch has some red and blue leaves. The background fades from dark gray at the top to light beige and blue at the bottom. There are several lines of Japanese text on the left and one red rectangular seal with Japanese characters on the bottom right.
