Torii Kiyonaga

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

A woman wearing a light pink kimono with a darker pink lining and a floral pattern stands on a wooden floor. The kimono has a long train. Her hair is styled up with two buns on the top of her head. She holds a shamisen, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument, in her left arm and a plectrum, or pick, in her right hand. Behind her is a beige wall with a window covered by shutters at the top. Two tassels hang down on either side of the window. There are Japanese characters written vertically on both sides of the image.
