Parsvanatha's Austerities: Folio from a Kalpasutra Manuscript

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Rectangular piece of aged paper with a vertical red line on the left edge. Black text written in a non-Latin script occupies the left two-thirds of the page, with a red circular seal to the right of the text. A colorful illustration takes up the right third of the page. The illustration depicts a male figure with a tan complexion wearing a crown-like headdress. He is surrounded by a red border. The figure's body appears emaciated; he has prominent ribs and a sunken abdomen. His right hand is raised to his chest, and his left hand rests on his thigh. A patterned cloth or fish-scale-like garment covers his lower body. The background of the illustration is gold with blue and red floral patterns. A blue border surrounds the red border of the illustration. The right edge of the paper appears uneven and worn.
