Mahavira Preaching to Monks and Nuns: Folio from a Kalpasutra Manuscript

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The image shows an aged, rectangular manuscript page with a beige background. The left side features a large rectangle with a blue and gold patterned top section, and a red background. Inside this rectangle, a central figure sits in a teaching position, gesturing with their right hand. The figure wears a simple loincloth and a shawl draped over their left shoulder. Behind and to the right of the central figure, another person sits. The right side of the page contains a column of black text in a non-Latin script. To the right of the text, a large rectangle is divided into four smaller sections, each depicting multiple figures. These figures wear similar attire to the central figure on the left. The rectangles on both sides of the page are bordered in blue and red. Three red circular marks are present: one to the left of the left rectangle, one between the text and the left rectangle, and one to the right of the right rectangle. Handwritten text is visible at the bottom of the page.
