Fragment of a Standing Buddha

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Fragment of a Standing Buddha by an unknown artist depicts a weathered, greenish metal statue of a standing human figure. The figure has a head with a small protuberance on top, representing an ushnisha or a crown. The face is smooth with small ears on the sides. The figure has two arms; the right arm is bent at the elbow with the hand pointing down and the left arm is bent at the elbow with the hand pointing up and out. The figure is wearing a long robe that falls to the ankles. The surface of the statue is heavily corroded and pitted. It is missing parts, particularly on the right side. The figure stands on two feet with no visible base. The background is plain and beige.
